Lions Club Members from Reno and Sparks were at the Reno City Hall to receive a Proclamation designating February as the Eyeglass Collection Month. All citizens are encouraged to participate and we are hoping to collect over 5,000 pairs of used eyeglasses. We hope to announce the results on March 3rd at the 50th Anniversary Dinner Celebration. DISTRICT GOVERNOR AT SPARKS GREENBRAE LIONS CLUB

District Governor Roy Madison visited Sparks Greenbrae Lions Club Tuesday morning and was greeted by a room full of Green Beret's, Reno Host and Reno Arch Lions.

Sparks Greenbrae scored an 'A' on their report card as they have sponsored Cub Scout Troop 46; they have planted trees(one per member) already; the Blood Drive is a community event as was the community picnic last weekend; added a new member and they like to have fun at 7:30 in the morning!! Their mantra for this year is "every member to bring one guest a month".

OCTOBER 22 ~ MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY AND LIONS TREE PLANTING PROJECT IN NORTHERN NEVADA.

Sparks Greenbrae Lions and Reno Arch Lions planted 32 trees at Golden Eagle Park in Sparks. There were Flowering Plums, Oak and some we had no idea about but it was a lot of fun, a lot of work and even the weather cooperated. Lion Eric (Greenbrae) understated the amount of work it would take so we are all bringing some of the over ripe tomatoes to the meeting Tuesday morning. One tree was also planted at Church Park which is sponsored by the Greenbrae Lions and was followed by a SGL Carne Asada/Hot Dog barbeque! It was attended by members of Reno Arch, Reno Host, Spanish Springs and Fernley Lions. Again a lot of fun and camaraderie and something to be proud of.

2011 Greatest Reno Grape Stomp in the history books!

Just like in NFL, there is now parity in the Lions Grape Stomp in Reno! Inviting more 'friends' provided more competition, conversation, color and some under-the-breath mutterings. Reno Host Lions were MIA unless the sound goes cluck-cluck........

Sparks Greenbrae Lions did take the first three places again but with some caveats - 1st and 3rd were "Friends of Sparks Greenbrae' while the 2-time defending champs, Lions Shaun and Suraj, not only came in second, they tied with Lions Cliff Cooper and Laurie from Spanish Springs! Congratulations to Laurie who seemed to provide the missing spring to Spanish Springs.

The first place winners were the pretty twin ladies, Jasmin and Jennifer Vaught. Jasmin, of the Computer-donor fame to the Lions in the North, friend of Sparks Greenbrae Lions.

And a friendly rivalry is born...................

Lion Eric Renteria helped the Reno Arch Lions clean Whittaker Park on October 1st.

Later on that evening, he went to The Note-Ables performance with his own, personal harem. There are some stories circulating about a later visit to a Mexican restaurant and innumerable Margaritas. What was that about Lions being old, wearing vests and not having fun?

STUDENT SPEAKERS CONTEST

The Lions Clubs of District 46 are proud to sponsor our 6^th Annual Lions Student Speakers Contest for our area high school students. This enables the students to earn scholarships to help continue their higher education. A total of $5,000 Scholarship to the Overall Winner. $1,000 Scholarship to the Region Winner!

Our challenging topic for this year is:

"NUCLEAR POWER – SAFE OR TOO DANGEROUS"

This thought provoking subject will give our youth the opportunity to explore in depth a topic that is of vital interest here and abroad; and one that needs immediate attention.

Club contest - the club shall present $25 to each participant and $75 to the winner.
Zone contest - the District presents $125 to the winner.
Region contest - the Lions Student Speaker Foundation awards a $1000 scholarship to the winner.
District contest - the Lions Student Speaker Foundation awards a $4000 scholarship to the winner.

The scholarships awards are granted for use at any accredited two or four year college, university, or to any other school approved by the Lions of District 46 Student Speaker Foundation, Inc. The purpose of the contest is to provide an opportunity for competitive public speaking among students on a subject of vital interest to the contestants, as well as to the American people as a whole; and to stimulate self-expression and independent thinking.

The contest is open to students, including foreign exchange students, grades 9 through 12, of any high school, charter school, private school or home school.

Lovelock Cabinet Meeting, August 20, 2011

A photo-op with Mayor Mike Giles of Lovelock for 2nd VDG Non Rybka, PID Vince Vinella, VDG Lia Versaevel and DG Roy Madison.

A 20' x 30' flag was presented by the City Council of Lovelock to the Lovelock Lions Club. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Lions and the Mayor to raise the new flag during a Lions Cabinet Meeting.

As the flag started to unfurl, there were thoughts of liberty, freedom, pride and Betsy Ross.

We were unit # 47 in a parade that lasted about an hour and a half. Afterwards the folks at the Military Museum there had fixed a BBQ lunch for all of us. All of it was homemade cooking, salads, desserts and and pop or water. Bret was riding with the American Legion, "Patriot Riders" a motorcycle group in several Legion Posts, Reno, Fernley-Wadsworth and Fallon and some others

ALICE HODGES WINS IT ALL AT THE LIONS SPEAKER CONTEST!

Alice Hodges won the District 46 Lions International(Nevada) Student Speakers contest in Minden on Saturday (May 7th).
She won a $4000 College Scholarship at the Lions Convention for a total of $5200 since the contest started in January.
Alice will be graduating from Nevada Christian Homeschool and will be one of the commencement speakers. She will be attending Arizona Christian University on a Student Leadership scholarship. She plans a double major in Music(worship emphasis) and Business.
Alice was sponsored by the Sparks Greenbrae Lions that meets at the Sparks Denny every Tuesday at 7:30am.

Winner of the Regional level of the District 46 Lions Student Speaker Contest

ALICE HODGES won the Regional level of the District 46 Lions Student Speaker Contest last night along with a $1,000 scholarship to a University or College of her choice. She now moves on to the final District level to be held on May 7 during the District 46 Convention in Gardnerville. She has the opportunity to win another scholarship worth $4,000 as the final winner. Alice is a home-school Senior, a classical pianist and plans to study Music at College. Alice is sponsored by the Sparks Greenbrae Lions Club. The Club meets every Tuesday morning at 7:30am at Denny's on Nugget Avenue. The latest batch of baby Lions for Sparks Greenbrae!! Being installed by our very own PDG Hugh Lantz. Orientation of SG Lions Eric Renteria, Amy & Robert Furman, and Rachel Lion Kathy Jackson-Snellbaker. The second picture is the Induction of Lions Eric, Amy, & Robert. Third is the induction of our newest Lion Nancy Bowling last Tuesday.

Due to this increase in membership I think we are no longer in the small club category. We now have 23 full members and 1 Associate. Also, at our last meeting we suggested to Lion Lia that she should become an Associate Member and she said yes. The menu consists of anti-pasto, green salad, spinach, green beans, Ravioli, roast beef, chicken, bread, spumoni and of course, some red wine. Great fun, food, friendship and fellowship -all arranged by honorary Lioness Donna.

Lion Jay of Sparks Greenbrae Lions went after the famous Bruno's Raviolis with gusto, energy and 'don't even try to take the platter away from me' look. The semi-annual bus trip to Gerlach is always a sell out and full of food, friendship, food, wine, drinks and some more food!

Bob & Suzanne Capurro at the Great Italian Columbus Day Festival 10-10-10

Lions Shaun Smith and Suraj Zutshi protected 'their honor' and, once again, won the Grape Stomp with juice worth 5.4 pounds on Sunday.
Friends of Sparks Greenbrae Lions Renee Brock teamed with Lesley Schmidt; and Mike Steedman with his wife Kristen, to round out the top three winners at this annual event that had a total of eight teams representing different clubs - Reno Host, Reno Arch and Sparks Greenbrae.

Beautiful weather, wonderful camaraderie, new friends, Spaghetti Sauce cook-off, Polenta,Ravioli, Arancini, Sfingi, Calamari, artichokes, pizza, flat bread, Bellini's, parmesan bread, Risotto, Meatballs, Italian sausage and peppers are just some of the attractions from Sunday. Just look at everyone smiling!

Reno Computer Specialist donates to Reno Cigar Lions "Computer for Kids" program

Jasmin Vaught, owner of Advantage Computers and a good friend/supporter of Sparks Greenbrae Lions has donated 18 computers and a server to the Reno Cigar Lions in the past three months!

On Saturday, September 18th, the Reno Cigar Lions gave away eight computers to kids who need them. Jasmin replaced those almost immediately with a donation of nine towers and keyboards on Saturday!

Installation Dinner on June 23, 2010 at the Holiday Inn. Our newly elected and first 2nd Vice District Governor appeared as Helen Keller, to do the honors of installation and induct our newest member Darlene Turner and new officers.

A special award was presented by Secretary Alan Snellbaker to Charter Lion George Twaddle for over 50 years of continuous membership in Lions Clubs International. The award of a Lions Belt Buckle inscribed with his name and the words "50 year member".

The torch has been passed to new officers with the exception of the Secretary, Alan G. Snellbaker, and the long time Treasurer, Robert Dickinson. Both of them were told they are eternal.

On Saturday, April 17th, the Reno Cigar Lions were having their monthly classes and computer give away for the Big Brothers Big Sisters at KNPB. That is a wonderful program that needs all our support.

Jasmin Vaught, owner of Advantage Computers in Reno, and a friend and supporter of Sparks Greenbrae Lions came to see the project and brought along nine towers to donate to the Cigar Lions! Since they have many donated monitors, the towers were indeed very welcome. Nevada truly has some of the kindest and most generous citizens and Jasmin is a perfect example of that.

COLT WILLIAMS Lions Student Speaker Contest Winner

Colt won the $1,000 college scholarship that goes along with this achievement at the Regional level competition held in Reno on March 27, 2010. Next stop, Elko for the final on May 1st at 10:45am. The $4,000 college scholarship is the top prize at stake.
Colt has proven to be a master speaker with the right amount of confidence and poise required and bets of all, he is always looking for ideas to improve and get better. Just two months ago, at the Club level he made a comment I won't forget for a long time: "I plan to be in Elko". He plans to attend Harvard or MIT and I am sure he will make it.

Lions In Sight Getting 25,000 Pairs of Eyeglasses!

DISTRICT 46 Lions recently completed used/unwanted eyeglasses collection. Sparks Greenbrae Lions collected 562 between January 17 and 31, 2010. Collection boxes were placed in local businesses in Reno and Sparks. Northern Nevada region collected over 12,000 pairs with the same amount collected by Southern Nevada.

Lions In Sight is going to receive almost 25,000 pairs in the next couple of weeks! These will be cleaned and categorized by prescription before being shipped to areas that need eye care and eyeglasses the most.

A job well done by ALL Lions Clubs in Nevada(and Truckee, CA too!).
